On competition day you’re carrying a uniform, shoes, a bow, hair and makeup supplies, water and snacks, often from a parking garage to a convention center. A good cheer bag keeps your shoes away from your uniform and your essentials easy to reach. What to Look for in a Cheer Bag
- A separate shoe compartment: this keeps shoes off your uniform. Some bags have a bottom or side shoe compartment, and some make it expandable or water-resistant. Not every “cheer backpack” has one, so check the listing.
- Size: most listings give dimensions in inches, not liters. For a comparison, a bag of about 20″ x 16″ x 7″ is a full-size backpack, while 13″ x 11″ x 6″ is a mini.
- Bottle pockets: look for side pockets that fit the bottle you actually use. Some listings give a size, like 24 oz or 40 oz.
- Carry options: backpack straps are easiest across a large venue. Duffels and rolling bags suit overnight trips.
- Team customization: many cheer bags can be embroidered or decorated with crystals for team names and logos. Some bags are sold for team orders, with a minimum quantity.
- Weight and material: 600-denier polyester is common on lower-priced bags. Some premium bags list lightweight nylon or water-resistant materials.

Competition-Day Packing List
Check your gym’s or event’s own list first. This one covers the basics, plus a few items that come straight from the rules.
Uniform and Appearance
- Competition uniform, including briefs (USASF requires briefs under a skirt)
- Warm-ups, plus a t-shirt or other cover-up. USASF requires athletes in non-full-top uniforms to wear a cover-up outside the warm-up area and the stage.
- Cheer shoes and cheer socks
- Bow, a spare bow, hair ties, bobby pins, brush and hairspray
- Team makeup and makeup remover
- A small pouch to store jewelry. Jewelry isn’t allowed while competing under USASF or USA Cheer rules, and taping over it doesn’t count (medical ID tags are the exception).
Food, Water and Comfort
- A refillable water bottle
- Snacks you know agree with you on a long day. Spit out gum before you warm up, because USASF rules don’t allow gum or candy in your mouth while practicing or performing.
- A layer for cold arenas, slides or comfortable shoes for between sessions, and a phone charger
Health and Safety
- A basic first-aid kit (bandages, athletic tape, blister care)
- Any medicine you’ve been prescribed, like an inhaler, packed and labeled as your doctor or parent directs. Don’t share medicines with teammates.
- Any brace or support you use. USASF rules require braces that have been altered from the original design to be padded if you’re involved in stunts, pyramids or tosses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a bag with a shoe compartment?
It isn’t required, but it keeps your shoes away from your uniform. If your bag doesn’t have one, a separate shoe bag works too. Rebel, for example, includes a shoe bag with several of its shoes.
Backpack or duffel?
A backpack is easier to carry around a big venue and to school. A duffel or rolling bag holds more for overnight trips. Many athletes use a backpack for the day and a suitcase for the hotel.
Does my team have a required bag?
Many all-star gyms and school teams order matching bags. Ask before you buy.
