Your cheer shoes are the one piece of equipment you wear for every stunt, jump and tumbling pass. The right pair depends on your team’s rules, the surface you cheer on, how you fit in each brand, and your budget. This guide explains what to check, then compares current models from Nfinity, Kaepa, Varsity, Rebel, Chassé and Nike using the specs their makers publish.

Start With the Rules (and Your Coach)

• All-star (USASF): athletes must wear soft-soled shoes with a solid sole while competing. Dance shoes, boots and gymnastics slippers are not allowed.
• College (USA Cheer): soft-soled athletic shoes are required. Gymnastics shoes, jazz shoes and boots are prohibited.
• School and youth teams: follow your state association’s or league’s rules, and your coach’s uniform requirements.

Many teams choose one model, or one color, for everyone. Ask before you buy so you don’t end up with the wrong pair.

What to Look For

• Stunt grip: Bases and back spots hold the flyer’s feet, so most cheer shoes have grip features. Kaepa uses a rear finger notch and Finger Grooves. Rebel uses Stunt Grooves and textured outsole edges. Nfinity puts grip zones on the outsole.
• Surface: Some shoes are designed for indoor mats. Nfinity says the Vengeance outsole grips indoor surfaces, and GK labels the Spotlight “indoor use only.” Others are built for any surface, like Kaepa’s Cheerful and Rebel’s Rally, Rise and Recon. If you cheer at outdoor games, choose a shoe its maker says works outside.
• Weight: Listed weights for the shoes below range from 3.8 oz to 7.9 oz. The lightest models are mostly sold as competition shoes. A lighter shoe isn’t automatically better for sideline cheer or outdoor use.
• Cushioning: Many of the shoes below list an EVA or Phylon sole to absorb landings. Some, like the Kaepa Stellarlyte and All American, also have a removable cushioned insole.
• Ankle support: Mid-top and high-top models like the Nfinity Beast, Varsity Aeros Elite 2 and Rebel Rogue add an ankle strap or brace. They’re a personal preference, not a requirement.
• Fit: Sizing varies a lot by brand (see below). A shoe that slips at the heel won’t give you stable footing in stunts.

Sizing: Every Brand Is Different

• Nfinity: says not to order your regular size. Use its size chart or Virtual Size Finder. Sizes run from youth 10 to adult 14.
• Kaepa: says to order your usual athletic shoe size. Its shoes are medium width, so go up a half size if you have wide feet. Men’s sizing is 1.5 sizes down from women’s.
• Varsity: links a sizing chart from its product pages. Sizes run from child 10 to adult 14.
• Rebel: most performance models are sold from youth 10 to adult 10.

Kaepa’s fit guidance is that a cheer shoe should feel snug in the heel and midfoot, with room to wiggle your toes. If you can, try shoes on with the socks you’ll practice in.

How to Care for Cheer Shoes

• Nfinity recommends hand washing with a soft brush or cloth and a gentle cleaner, then rinsing and air drying. Don’t machine wash or tumble dry.
• Rebel recommends removing the laces and insoles, wiping the shoe with mild detergent in lukewarm water, and not submerging the shoe.
• If your shoes are made for indoor use, keep them for the mat. Wearing them outside wears down the outsole and grip pads faster.

When to Replace Your Cheer Shoes

• The outsole or grip pads are worn smooth
• The sole is separating from the upper
• The cushioning feels flat or you can feel the floor through the shoe
• Holes appear at the toe
• They’ve become too tight or short, which happens fast with growing athletes

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear running shoes for cheer?

Check your team’s rules first. Running shoes are usually soft-soled athletic shoes, but cheer shoes add things running shoes don’t have, like stunt grip features and a low, flat profile for bases to hold. Many teams require a specific cheer shoe.

Are lighter shoes always better?

No. The lightest models are built mainly for indoor competition. If you cheer outside or want more cushioning, a slightly heavier shoe made for multiple surfaces may suit you better.

What shoes should a beginner buy?
