This guide covers cheerleading at UNC Charlotte, officially the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and often called simply Charlotte. Its teams are the Charlotte 49ers, and they compete in The American Conference. How Team Selection Has Worked
The most recent process Charlotte published (for 2023-24) was not an open tryout. The page says candidates “must receive an invitation through a recruitment clinic or by submitting a video.” It worked like this:
- Apply online. Candidates submitted an application form to receive information about the selection process. Only applicants received team selection information.
- Virtual information meeting. Charlotte held a virtual meeting for all applicants (on March 1 that year).
- Round 1: videos. Videos were due in early April (April 3 that year), and invitations to Round 2 went out by mid-April (April 17).
- Round 2: live tryout. Invited candidates attended a live tryout in late April (April 28-30).
Charlotte sent all candidate information by email or through the season’s tryout BAND app. Treat these dates as a pattern only; the next cycle’s dates and requirements have not been published.
What Charlotte Has Not Published
Charlotte Athletics has not published current skill requirements, a GPA minimum, a squad structure (coed or all-girl), or clinic dates for the cheer team. Rather than guess, ask the coach. Useful questions:
- When will the application for the next season open, and where is it posted?
- Are there recruitment clinics this year, and when?
- What skills should your videos show?
- Which paperwork (medical, insurance, admission) is required, and when?
