Florida Atlantic’s cheerleaders are part of FAU Spirit, alongside the dance team and Owlsley the mascot. The program is run by FAU Athletics, not as a campus club sport. It’s also on the rise: in April 2026, FAU’s cheer team competed in the Advanced All-Girl Division IA at NCA College Nationals for the first time and finished eighth.

An honest note before you start: FAU doesn’t currently publish an up-to-date cheer tryout page. The details below come from FAU’s 2026-27 roster and its most recent official releases. Where we rely on older FAU material, we say so.

FAU’s Cheer Program Today

• Coaches (2026-27 roster): Head Cheer Coach Meghan Buchanan and Assistant Cheer Coach Tammy Licavoli. Claudia Soto is Spirit Coordinator and Head Dance Coach.
• Competition: at 2026 NCA & NDA College Nationals, the cheer team placed eighth in its Advanced All-Girl Division IA debut. Together with the dance team, drumline and Owlsley, it also took third place (bronze) in Game Day Division IA.

How FAU Tryouts Have Worked

FAU’s most detailed published tryout information is an older program page from 2014. It’s useful as a guide to how the program has operated, but not as current rules:

• Timing: tryouts were held each May for the following season.
• Eligibility: a letter of acceptance from FAU admissions, or current full-time enrollment.
• GPA: current students needed a cumulative 2.0 or better.
• Paperwork: a physical from the last 12 months, signed medical history forms, a copy of a sickle cell solubility test lab report, proof of insurance, a registration form with a photo, and a consent form.
• Squads: FAU described both coed and all-girl opportunities.
• Scholarships: FAU said it offered partial scholarships, with amounts depending on the athletic budget.
• Video: the coaching staff said it didn’t accept tryout videos.

Treat all of the above as background. Confirm the current rules with the coaching staff before you plan around them, in particular the squad structure and whether video is accepted, since FAU’s 2026 competition entry was all-girl.

Prospect Clinics

FAU’s athletics site still hosts an older Cheerleading Prospect Clinic page, but it dates from 2009: its registration deadline was March 1, 2009, and it names a former head coach. That clinic covered coed and all-girl stunt technique, tumbling, fitness and interview skills. When this guide was checked in September 2026, FAU’s Team Camps & Clinics page didn’t list a cheer clinic, so ask the coaching staff whether a prospect clinic is planned.

How to Prepare

• Train for all-girl stunting. FAU’s 2026 competition entry was Advanced All-Girl, so multi-base group stunting matters. Be ready to base, back spot or fly. See our guides on basing and flying.
• Tumbling: an advanced-division team will expect strong standing and running tumbling. Build from a consistent back handspring and standing tuck.
• Game-day skills: FAU medaled in Game Day, so sharp motions, crowd-leading and sideline material matter as much as skills.
• Contact the staff early to confirm the next tryout date and requirements.
