Alabama State University’s cheerleaders support the Hornets, a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) program in Montgomery, Alabama. Alabama State Athletics doesn’t publish tryout dates, requirements or forms for cheer online, so this is a short guide to what the university does publish: who coaches the team, who is on it, and how to get in touch.
Where the cycle stands (September 30, 2026): the 2026-27 roster is posted, and no tryout information for the next squad is on the athletics site. Contact the coaches directly for dates and requirements.
The Coaching Staff
- Porsha Redd, Head Coach. She returned to Alabama State as head cheer coach in June 2024. She is an ASU alumna who cheered for the Hornets, and she has more than 20 years of school and all-star cheer experience.
- Whitney Walker, Assistant Cheer Coach
- Clifford Covington, Assistant Cheer Coach (Stunts)
Coach Redd’s official bio says she and Coach Covington led Alabama State to its first appearance at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The Team
The 2026-27 roster lists 22 cheerleaders. In summer 2025, the squad went to camp in Louisville, Kentucky (July 26–28). Two members were named All-Americans, an honor based on elite tumbling and stunting skills, and the team earned a Silver At-Large Bid to nationals the following April. Coach Redd noted the team had been together less than two weeks at that point.
How to Prepare Without Published Requirements
Because Alabama State doesn’t list required skills, ask the coaches these questions before you train for a specific list:
- When are tryouts, and is there a clinic beforehand?
- Can incoming freshmen try out before they enroll, and what proof of admission is needed?
- What tumbling and stunting skills do you expect, and do you take video tryouts?
- What paperwork (physical, insurance, transcript) and fees are required?
