Albany State University’s cheerleaders support the Golden Rams, who compete in NCAA Division II in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Albany State Athletics publishes only short tryout notices for cheer, and the most recent one is for spring 2023. This guide sums up what those official notices say and who to contact for the next cycle.
Where the cycle stands (September 30, 2026): Albany State hasn’t posted a cheer tryout announcement since 2023, and the latest roster on the athletics site is for 2024-25. Before you plan around any date, contact the cheer coaches or the athletics department (see Contacts below).
How Recent Tryouts Worked
The last official notices describe an in-person tryout held on campus in the spring:
- 2023: tryouts ran Saturday, April 15 (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday, April 16 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) in the Jones Brothers Health, Physical Education and Recreation Gymnasium on ASU’s East Campus.
- 2022: all items, including forms and payments, were submitted in person during registration on April 2. Albany State said there were no online submissions that year.
- 2021 (for the 2021-22 squad): candidates paid a $50 registration fee online and completed a tryout packet. Supporting documents were a copy of your insurance card (front and back) and a headshot. Tryouts were May 15–16 at the Jones Brothers HPER Complex.
Dates, fees and paperwork can change from year to year, so treat these as examples of how Albany State has run tryouts, not as the next cycle’s rules.
What to Have Ready
Based on those notices, expect to need:
- The tryout packet or forms for that year
- A registration fee (it was $50 in 2021)
- A copy of your health insurance card, front and back
- A headshot
Albany State doesn’t publish required tumbling or stunting skills for cheer, so ask the coaches what they want to see before you prepare a skills list.
The Team
The 2024-25 roster lists 39 cheerleaders, 36 of them from Georgia. The roster includes students in majors such as nursing, biology, business administration and health and human performance.

Do I need to be an Albany State student?
Albany State’s notices don’t spell out eligibility rules. The 2021 tryout picked the squad for the following school year, so ask the coaches whether accepted incoming freshmen can try out.
