Troy University Cheerleading Tryout Guide

College Cheerleading Tryout Guides - CheerleadersLife

Troy University picks its cheerleaders at an in-person tryout each spring. You pre-register online, bring a short list of documents and a cash fee, and go through a two-day tryout that starts with a conditioning test. The Trojans cheer for a Sun Belt Conference athletics program and compete nationally: the squad finished seventh in the DIA Small Coed division at UCA College Nationals in January 2025, after ninth in 2024. This guide follows Troy Athletics’ own tryout announcement and registration form.

Where the cycle stands (September 29, 2026): Troy’s tryout link, TroyTrojans.com/CheerTryout, still opens the 2025-26 application, and Troy hasn’t posted a newer tryout announcement. The 2026-27 roster is already posted, so the next open tryout would be for 2027-28. The details below are from the 2025-26 cycle. Use them to prepare, and confirm the new dates when Troy posts them.

How the Tryout Worked (2025-26 Cycle)

  1. Pre-register online. Registration is required. For 2025-26, the deadline was Monday, April 14, 2025.
  2. Get the follow-up email. Troy emails registered candidates the paperwork to bring.
  3. Attend the two-day tryout. For 2025-26, it ran April 18–19, 2025.

A video tryout is possible only if the coach approves it. On the application, you check “video submission” and explain why you need one. For 2025-26, approved candidates got instructions by email on April 1, and videos were due April 18 at 5 p.m.

Positions

Troy holds tryouts for these positions, and the application lets you pick up to two:

  • Coed flier
  • All-girl flier
  • Main base
  • Secondary base
  • Back spot
  • Coed male
  • Mascot (T-Roy)

The form also asks for your height, weight, age, classification for the fall, major, cheer or mascot experience, Instagram handle and uniform sizes, and whether another Troy sport is recruiting you.

What to Bring

  1. The Troy insurance waiver
  2. A copy of a recent sports physical. All new candidates must have an outside physical before trying out.
  3. The tryout fee: $50, cash only
  4. A 5×7 headshot
  5. A photo of your insurance card
  6. A letter of recommendation (new members)

Troy also requires every candidate to have medical insurance.

Tryout Schedule (2025-26 Example)

  • Day 1, Friday (Elm Street Gym): doors open at 3:30 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. the Benchmark conditioning test starts (with breaks), followed by a tumbling evaluation and open gym for stunts.
  • Day 2, Saturday (Trojan Arena): open gym at 9 a.m., then the open tryout at noon.

Because the tryout opens with a conditioning test, train your endurance as well as your skills. Troy doesn’t publish minimum tumbling or stunt skills, so show your best skills cleanly and safely.

What to Wear

  • Everyone: Troy attire or Troy colors. Shorts in black, white or cardinal; no skirts.
  • Women: a form-fitting tank top (black, white or cardinal), a white bow, tall socks, and game day hair and makeup.
  • Men: well-groomed.

The Team and Coach

Nic Laracuente is Troy’s head cheer coach, according to the Troy Athletics staff directory. At the 2023 UCA College Nationals, Troy placed sixth in DI Small Coed and eighth in DI Coed Gameday, its first Gameday finals appearance, in what Troy Athletics called one of the best performances in school history. The 2026-27 roster lists 53 members.

Questions? The registration form asks you to email Coach Nic at nlaracuente@troy.edu with the subject line “YOUR NAME-TRYOUT INFORMATION”.
