Oregon State University Cheerleading Tryout Guide

College Cheerleading Tryout Guides - CheerleadersLife

At Oregon State, cheerleading is part of Beaver Spirit, which the university calls the official performance team of OSU Athletics. It has two parts: Beaver Cheer and the Beaver Dance Team. Beaver Cheer is one combined squad that includes both all-girl (group) and co-ed (partner) stunting. This guide is based on OSU Spirit’s official 2026-27 tryout application and its program site.

Who Can Try Out

OSU’s application lists these requirements:

  • You must be a student in good standing, enrolled full-time on the Corvallis campus.
  • You need a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher.
  • Not admitted yet? You can still try out. If you make the team, you must provide admission confirmation before reporting to Doubles Training Camp in mid-August.
  • New members who are accepted must also provide a full-time fall term schedule before the first day of fall classes.

For cheer skills, OSU asks for experience in tumbling, learning and performing cheer choreography, stunting and game-day sidelines, plus “the ability to adapt, be versatile and driven in your skills.”

How Tryouts Work

All cheer tryouts are in person. For 2026-27, OSU’s schedule was:

  • Registration closed April 20.
  • Saturday, April 25 — Cheer Prelims. Check-in at 3:30 p.m.; tryouts from 4 to 9 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 26 — Cheer Finals. Check-in at 8 a.m.; tryouts from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Location: Truax Indoor Football Center, 661 SW 30th St, Corvallis.

Before day one you must:

  • Complete OSU’s participation waiver. A parent or guardian signs if you’re a minor.
  • Bring a printed copy of your headshot.

Details on attire and what to bring are emailed after registration closes. The 2026 dates have passed. Watch the Beaver Spirit links page for the next application and current tryout dates.

Clinics

OSU Spirit runs three kinds of clinics:

  • Open Clinics (fall and winter) — ages 14–25, from high school freshmen to current college students. New material each time.
  • Tryout Prep Clinic (spring) — ages 16–25, high school juniors and seniors and current college students. Includes a mock audition. In 2026 it was held on April 11.
  • Mini Beavs — ages 5–13, not related to tryouts.

The Tryout Prep Clinic’s mock audition is the closest thing to a practice run of the real tryout. If you’re a serious candidate, it’s worth attending.

What the Team Does

Beaver Spirit members perform at all football, basketball and volleyball games, plus other sporting and promotional events that OSU Athletics assigns. OSU describes members as ambassadors for the university, campus and community.

How to Prepare

  • Decide whether you’re a group or partner stunter — or both. Beaver Cheer uses both styles, so versatility helps. See our guides on flying and basing.
  • Tumbling: build from a consistent back handspring toward a standing tuck and running passes.
  • Sideline skills count. OSU names game-day sideline experience specifically, so practice sharp motions and crowd-leading.
  • Go to the spring Tryout Prep Clinic for the mock audition.
