App State Cheer holds its tryouts in May. They start with a tryout prep clinic, and only invited athletes go on to the two-day tryout. This guide follows App State Athletics’ “App State 26-27 Cheerleading Tryout Info” post. The page address still says 2024-25, but the content covers the 2026 cycle (tryouts for the 2026-27 team). As of October 1, 2026, App State hadn’t posted dates for the 2027-28 team.

The Program

• Longtime coach. Morgan Delgado became Spirit Coordinator and Head Cheer Coach in August 2014. She cheered for the Mountaineers from 2011 to 2014.
• Coed competition history. Under Delgado, App State placed third in the Small Coed Division at the 2017 and 2018 CanAm College Nationals, the squad’s first competitions since the early 2000s.
• Conference. App State competes in the Sun Belt Conference.

How Tryouts Worked in 2026

All sessions ran May 15–17, 2026, in Varsity Gym in Boone.

1. Friday, May 15, 5:00–7:00 PM: Tryout Prep Clinic. Registration was online. At check-in you turned in a waiver and a 5×7 headshot and received a number. The clinic was open to high school juniors and seniors and to college students looking to cheer in college. The registration page listed a $54 fee.
2. Invitation. High school seniors needed a tryout invitation letter from the clinic to continue. Without one, they couldn’t attend May 16–17. Juniors could receive a “recruitment letter” for the following season.
3. Saturday–Sunday, May 16–17, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM: tryout and team placement. At check-in you turned in your tryout medical paperwork and received your tryout number.

Tryout Material

• The fight song.
• Three sidelines: offense, defense and general.
• The band dance.
• Running and standing tumbling.
• Partner stunting.

Athletes learned the material at the Friday clinic with current App State cheerleaders. App State doesn’t publish a minimum skill list, GPA requirement or tryout fee beyond the clinic registration.

Medical Paperwork

The tryout medical paperwork had to be complete before the May 15 clinic. It includes:

• Sickle cell test results, which athletics requires. App State warns that results can take a few days, so plan ahead.
• An updated physical.
• A copy of your insurance card.

Clinics Before the Next Tryout

The program’s camp site, Mountaineer Spirit Camps, lists these fall 2026 events:

• Cheer Prospect Clinic on November 8, 2026, for grades K–12 ($95 including fees). An earlier session ran on October 3.
• College Prep Skills Camp on October 11, 2026, for high school boys and girls, at Carolina Spirit Athletics in Winston-Salem. App State coaches and cheerleaders teach college-level stunts, pyramids and baskets ($137 including fees).

Frequently Asked Questions

When are App State cheer tryouts? In 2026, they ran May 15–17: a prep clinic on Friday, then tryouts on Saturday and Sunday. Dates for 2027 aren’t posted yet.

Can a high school senior just show up on Saturday? No. In 2026, seniors had to attend the Friday clinic and receive a tryout invitation letter to continue.
