Marshall University Cheerleading Tryout Guide

College Cheerleading Tryout Guides - CheerleadersLife

Marshall University doesn’t post a cheer tryout packet, tryout dates or a skills list on its athletics website. What it does publish is a route in: an official Athletics Team Try-Out Inquiry form, the eligibility paperwork every walk-on needs, and the names of the cheer coaches. This guide covers what Marshall has actually posted, and how to get tryout details from the program.

About Marshall Cheer

  • A coed team. The 2026-27 cheerleading roster on HerdZone lists 31 cheerleaders, men and women.
  • Part of “Cheer, Dance and Marco”. Marshall Athletics groups the cheer team with the dance team and Marco, the mascot.
  • Coaches. The 2025-26 coaching staff page lists Kenyatta Grant as Head Cheer Coach and Samantha Hampton as Assistant Cheer Coach. Grant was hired in June 2025. She cheered at Marshall from 1991 to 1994 and has been a certified cheer judge for the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission since 2006.

How to Ask About Tryouts

Marshall Athletics takes walk-on tryout requests through one form, the Athletics Team Try-Out Inquiry Survey. It’s linked from the HerdZone menu. The form says that tryouts are “held at the discretion of the head coach.” After you submit it, a sport-specific staff member will email you if tryouts are planned for that sport and your answers show you can be contacted under NCAA recruiting rules.

You can also reach the coaches through the email addresses listed on the cheerleading coaches page.

Eligibility Paperwork

According to the inquiry form, to try out for any Marshall Athletics team you need proof of:

  • Full-time enrollment at Marshall University.
  • Current health insurance coverage.
  • A physical completed within the last 365 days.

Other sports also need NCAA Eligibility Center clearance, but the form says it’s not required for Cheer or Dance.

What Marshall Doesn’t Publish

As of September 2026, Marshall hasn’t posted tryout dates for the 2027-28 team, a skills list, a GPA minimum or a tryout fee. Ask the coaching staff what the tryout will include.

Until then, work on the basics that college game-day cheer uses: sharp motions, jumps, standing and running tumbling, and coed partner stunting. Our tryout tips cover how to prepare.

Cheer Is Not STUNT

Marshall also has a STUNT team, listed on HerdZone as a women’s sport with its own head coach. STUNT is a separate competitive sport, not the sideline cheer team. If you’re interested in STUNT, check the STUNT section of the Marshall Athletics staff directory.
