James Madison University Cheerleading is thrilled to facilitate oneself tryouts for this season! oneself tryouts will take place in JMU.

In Person Tryouts:

  • Open gym in Godwin Hall Sinclair Gym
    • Check-in
    • Tumble evaluation in Godwin Hall Sinclair Gym B, First round of cuts
    • JMU Football Spring Game, Admission is free

 Cheerleading roster who made first round cuts will cheer during the spring game

  • Material review and stunt practice in Godwin Hall Gymnastics Room
    • Fight song evaluation in Godwin Hall Sinclair Gym A, Second round of cuts
    • Lunch break
    • Interviews in Godwin Hall Gymnastics Room
    • Stunt evaluation in Godwin Hall Sinclair Gym B, Final selections

Pre-Registration Process: 

The following materials must be submitted. Noncompliance will result in immediate forfeiture of your tryout process.

  1. Completed pre-registration form
  2. Electronic copy of completed physical from within, In the event a physical must be completed, please use this tryout physical form
  3. Electronic copy of front and back of insurance card

What You Need:

  • Attire: Black shorts, purple t-shirt, cheer shoes, white ribbon for women
  • What to bring: Water bottle, snacks/lunch, personal tape and/or braces
  • Tryout packet: Current headshot, two references for non-current members, copy of JMU Letter of Acceptance or JMU Jaccard, completed Tryout Agreement form

Our Team:

  • Co-Ed (up to 20 members)
  • All-Girl (up to 20 members)

Minimum Tumbling Requirements: 

  • Standing tuck
  • Running tumbling to tuck

All tumbling skills must be performed on turf, hardwood, and a non-spring floor.

All-Girl Cheerleaders will be evaluated on:

  • Full Up, J-Up Liberty, Heel Stretch

Co-Ed Cheerleaders will be evaluated on:

  • Liberty, Toss & Walk-In Extension, Shoulder Stand

Game Day Evaluations:

  • Fight Song
  • Game Day Appearance


  • Each cheerleader will be interviewed by a member of the JMU Athletics staff

Squad Selection Information

Prospective members will be evaluated at tryouts on game day and elite stunting, standing and running, sideline motions, and the JMU Fight Song. Each cheerleader’s skills will be assessed at each station by JMU representatives and coaches. They will be asked to show their best level of proficiency at each station and will be coached through new skills to assess coachability. Our coaching staff will look at crowd leading ability, physical fitness, game day appearance, and personal character. ALL potential members must show or submit an acceptance letter to the university prior to tryouts.

JMU Cheer Clinics

Cheer clinics for all JMU will be open for all grade students and current college students who are aiming to be part of the JMU Cheerleading Program. Clinics will be hosted in Gym inside Godwin Hall. A When the registration form is completed the payment link will be attached there. The liability waiver is under the “College Prep Clinics” tab of our website. Please print it and bring the filled-out form with you to the clinic.
